6 MILES, QUADS HURT JUST A BIT:(

Gorgeous day today. Blue skies and sunny, about 68 degrees, when I went for my run at 9:30 a.m. It was hot, but not that humid and there was a nice breeze. Originally I was thinking to do this run on the treadmill at the gym (because my quads were aching a little), and I wanted a nice flat easy pace today. But my husband did his run on the TM yesterday and said the gym was SOO hot, they didn't have the a/c on:( He said when he finished his run, and walked outside, that it felt cooler. So, I decided to run my run outside and deal with the achiness. It wasn't that bad. Planned to do both loops (8miles), but ended up just doing one loop, and then finishing on flat ground to make an even 6 miles for the day. Quads felt ok when going up and down the hills, but the ice bath afterwards was LOVELY!!!! It felt awesome, and legs feel good now, though the quads are a bit achy. I NEED TO FIND A LOOP IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD OR SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD THAT IS ALL FLAT! LOL

You're all probably wondering why my quads are achy. Well, it wasn't from running. MY wonderful husband got the family Wii Fit, and I used it yesterday on my rest day from running. I love it!! I did the yoga moves (I mean strength training moves) and really worked my quads. It felt good while I was doing it, but man, I could feel my quads this morning when I woke. Nothing major, they were just telling me I worked them yesterday. LOL I really like the Wii, it teaches you how to do the moves, and really shows your progress, and helps you to improve, as yoga is NOT my favorite thing, as I am so NOT limber. But if I keep at the Wii Fit, I will get better and stronger. Just not sure how to incorporate the Wii workouts with my running, as I don't want to not run, in order to do the Wii Fit. Anybody out in cyberspace have any suggestions on how I can do both? I'm thinking do it after the run that I have a rest day the next day, where I do nothing.

Distance: 6 miles
Duration: 1:03:00
Avg pace: 10:30
Calories: 522
Avg HR: 140bpm Cardia Drift: 163 (Not sure what my Max is????)

Splits were as follows:
Mile 1: 10:54 139bpm Cardia Drift: 160
Mile 2: 10:21 140bpm Cardia Drift: 153
Mile 3: 11:21 145bpm Cardia Drift: 162
Mile 4: 10:30 136bpm Cardia Drift: 163
Mile 5: 10:16 140bpm Cardia Drift: 162
Mile 6: 11:08 140bpm Cardia Drift: 151

Nice job on the run and fighting through achy quads! I always enjoy running outside rather than on the TM.

If you want to incorporate Wii Fit I would just use it as a cross training day ot on a day when you have a short run scheduled.

Hi d10,

Thanks for the suggestion:) Would you run the next day after doing the WiiFit with a short run, or take the next day off??

LOL I SOOOOOO stink at the Yoga but I too want to use it regularly. Luckily I've been too busy with all the balance and aerobics games lately. Otherwise I'd probably be more achy too hehe.

Marcy,
I just posted to your blog. I made a mistake, I didn't do the yoga, I did the strength training: single leg extensions, torso twists, jackknife, lunges & rowing squats. No wonder my quads hurt!!! Guess I should have stuck to yoga, but since I've never done it before, I didn't even know I wasn't doing yoga. How lame am I?? LOL

Hi,

To answer your question about running after the WiiFit, I think you could follow it with a short run, but see how you feel and slowly build up. Like starting any new form of exercise you are going to be sore at the beginning.

As for the spinning, I think it is a great form of cross training and many other runners I know like it too. Last year all I did was run and it took a toll on me both physically and mentally, especially during the summer months. Spinning gives me a good workout without all the pounding. And, since the environment is different it really mixes things up. My quads were a little tight at the beginning, but are fine now. If you have the opportunity to go I would.

Thanks for the advice d10!!

As of today, everything is on hold until these quads stop aching. LOL, that is except running. I still can't believe how the WiiFit kicked my ass:)

I've been contemplating the Wii Fit. It seems to work for you!

I don't want anything to interfere with my training for Chicago, so I am thinking of setting the Wii Fit as my reward for running the Marathon.

Hang in there!

Hi cewtwo,

When you get the WiiFit, you will LOVE it. It's the perfect reward for running a marathon!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE WiiFit, I just did way too much:) I should have just done one exercise once, instead I did 5 execercies like 3 or 4 times. I kept hitting retry, instead of end. LOL It felt great while I was doing it, just didn't realize how much I really was using the muscles.

But it does work. Just take it slow. I start training for my half on June 9th, so at least I learned my lesson now, and not during my training. I'm sure I'll be pain free by then. But I will figure out how to incorporate it into my training. But the key is, not doing too much, and to take it slow:)

Good luck with your marathon training!!!

Hi! I don't have a wii fit but do a leg routine that does the same thing to me. I usually try to do my running in the morning and then do legs after that. If I get to the gym early enough the next day I am OK as long as I warm up. If I wait til late in the day I am no good for a run. With legs it is usually about 18-24 hours that you have the biggest probs (at least for me and those I have talked to).

Hope that helps a bit!z

Thanks running to stand still for stopping by and the advice:)

It's always great hearing how other people deal with the same issues. I really don't have running friends close by I can just pick up the phone and call, so your comments were very helpful to me. Thanks again!
